2004 ADIDAS U-19 NATIONAL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: Cebu barges to semifinals

Team Cebu barged into the semifinal round even as it scored a 1-all draw against Davao City to end the elimination round of the Adidas Under-19 National Football Championship yesterday at the University of San Carlos Technological Center.
Today, the event organized by the Cebu Football Association and the Philippine Football Association with backing from Adidas and Superferry, will take a breather and will resume Sunday for the semifinal round.
In the crossover semifinal, host Cebu will be facing a tough assignment as it meets defending champion Iloilo City, the top performing team in bracket B, while Davao City, the leader in bracket B tangles opposite the National Capital Region (NCR).
The winners will move on to the finals on Monday and the losers to battle for third place.
Yesterday, the Cebu team was clearly dominating the match even as two attempts by the Cebuanos in the early goings of the game failed to sneak in.
Martin Bontia?s shot in the 6th was wide while a header by Junard Aguilar sailed high in the 12th.
Davao City offered little resistance, however, Cebu goalkeeper Dominic Gallego miscalculated a shot from Glenn Bulaquiña, which placed Davao ahead, 1-0, a minute before the break.
But three minutes later, the streaking Michael Sharpe was left wide open to score and tie the game 1-all.
Cebu then tightened its defenses, preventing Davao from further hitting more goals.
Davao received four yellow cards in the process from Ronald Mahilum, while Marlon Laquiete, Jed Ocera and Andy Estimo received one each for entering the field without permission.
Earlier, Iloilo City scorched Masbate booters as they handed them a 5-0 whipping.
Ruben Doctora led the scoring binged where he banged in at the 75th and 81st minutes.
Robert Lectora ignited Ilo-ilo City?s campaign when he scored in the 31st, while Mark Ferrer and Antonio Albor chipped in one each in the 57th and 78th, respectively.
NCR, on the other hand, cruised to late game surge with Mark Lusung scoring two goals to trounce Iligan City.
With a scoreless first half, Lusung struck NCR?s first goal at the 74th and made a follow up at the 79th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Two minutes after, NCR?s Francis Liza found the back of the net to stretch the lead to 3-0, but Kevin Deano answered back to give Iligan its lone goal at the 84th. |
