Early Cebu Football History
Foreigners, mainly clergy, expatriates and the officers and crewmembers of visiting ships, introduced football to Cebu more than seventy years ago. In time football schools and seminaries formed teams. Although no major leagues were organized, there were a number of competitions on weekends, during school celebrations and whenever there were visiting teams made up of officers and crew of foreign ships in port.

As a forerunner to the formation of the Cebu Football Association, (CFA), former Congressman William Chiongbian, an avid football player during his college days, formed the William Lines Football Team. Initially confining their football activities to Cebu they played local collegiate teams seminarians and visiting teams. The team ventured outside of Cebu playing tournaments in the traditional football strongholds of the Philippines, namely Dumaguete, Bacolod and Iloilo. The former Congressman and respected Cebu businessman also encouraged the formation of other teams such as Casino Español, Hap Hing Hardware and United Hardware.

The William Lines team soon ran out of opponents and eventually was brought to Manila to participate in tournaments there. Unfortunately pressure of his thriving shipping business saw him curtail his involvement in football.

On December 18, 1961 Engineer Rosendo Hernaez, an avid football player, organized the Cebu Football Association. He was elected the first Cebu Football Association (CFA) President. Joining him, as elected officials of the first Board of Directors were Mr. Gregorio Sodusta as Vice-president, Mr. Valentino Darunday, SVD Treasurer, and Mr. Joaquin M. de Ubago SR, Secretary.
